The first strange event happened at Matchstick Wood which is a free wild camping site on the outskirts of Bedford just off of a tributary to the Great Ouse, the site consists of a number of named clearings set amongst predominantly Ash woodland with a covered pallet area by each clearing for stacking and storing firewood as well as a couple of ‘composting’ toilets near each section (nothing more than a rustic loo seat on top of a wooden box over a hole, and a half-height privacy screen but still better than digging a hole yourself!). It’s a great little spot that feels like you’re in the middle of nowhere, yet can be conveniently accessed within a half hour walk from the nearby village of Willington or via the water.
